Wind energy is a type of renewable energy that is powered by the wind. The typical way of taking advantage of this type of energy is through the use of wind generators or turbines.
How do we produce electricity from wind? The direct predecessor of the current wind generators are the old windmills, which even today are still being used for extracting water or for milling grain.
A windmill has rotor blades connected to a common shaft, which begins turning when the wind blows. This rotating shaft is connected to different types of machinery like for example machinery for milling grain, pumping water or producing electricity.
To produce electricity, the movement of the blades or vanes in turn move an electrical generator that converts mechanical rotating energy into electrical power. The electricity may be stored using batteries or it may be directly input into the grid. The operation is very simple and what becomes more complex is the construction of wind generators that are increasingly more efficient.
